Restaurante Oviedo: Guatemala y Humboldt

Amongst all the trendy restaurants within the Humboldt/Fitz Roy and Guatemala blocks of Palermo Hollywood is Restaurante Oviedo, a humble looking establishment that serves up your typical parrilla but also has an extensive menu of other chioces. At this restaurant I was excited to see arroz con pollo on the menu and immediately made that my entree choice.

The waiter immediately recommended that this dish be shared because the portion would be enough for two and he was absolutely correct. There is no way I would’ve been able to eat the entire dish myself. What you have is half a pollo cut-up into this enormous mound of rice that is seasoned and mixed with various vegetables; topped off with grated parmesan cheese, an interesting addition. Simply put, this was one of my favorite meals without a doubt. I’ve had terrible arroz con pollo in the US and great arroz con pollo in Costa Rica but this one puts a spin to the traditional way I’ve known it to be made where the chicken is pulled and mixed into the rice. This gigantic mound of arroz con pollo will run you around $6 USD and easily feeds 2. Consider that a deal when put up against the flash of Palermo Hollywood. On a side note, I also had a chorizo here and when split in half you could see all the chunks of fat cooked up nicely with the pork. Now that was some good chorizo too but something I couldn’t order again the second time I went here for arroz con pollo.

Restaurante Oviedo seems to hold its own against the fancy restaurants of Palermo Hollywood because their food is simple and cheap but tastes great. As one of the few restaurants that I didn’t order bife I was so impressed that I had to go back here knowing that I’d never get arroz con pollo like this back home. If in the area I’d completely recommend trying this place. If not for arroz con pollo, take it as an alternate to all the restaurants that try too hard and that come and go in Palermo Hollywood.
