La Caballeriza: Alicia Moreau de Justo 580 (I don’t know what happened to the sign)

La Caballeriza has two locations, one on the Palermo Soho/Hollywood border and another in Puerto Madero next to Cabaña Las Lilas. I went to the Puerto Madero location and as with Cabaña Las Lilas my expectations weren’t met. Maybe it’s because these restaurants are in Puerto Madero couple with the higher prices of restaurants there but once again I was not impressed.

I can begin with the service not being up to par with other parrillas. The woman who was taking care of our table gave us the impression that she seemed to be having a bad night as displayed by her lack of attentiveness that we’d grown accustomed to at other parrillas. You could say that as Americans we might be expecting too much in regards to service but based on service experiences in other restaurants I can honestly say that comparably we got the shaft.

As for the meat, well, once again, for the price paid, it was not exceptional, especially for being right next door to Cabaña Las Lilas and having to compete with them. The prices were a bit less over there but being in Puerto Madero it is just assumed that you’ll be paying a higher price for meal than if you in San Telmo. We had an order of asado de tira which was a lot for even two people to share. Actually not bad quality but from what I recall the ratio of fat and meat favored the fat on some pieces. I don’t recall the Spanish name of the cut I ordered but it was the beef ribs. However, unlike when you go to Tony Romas and order their “Bountiful Beef Ribs” these ones actually had meet on them; the cut of meat on top of the rib was still attached where most supermarkets in the US sell just the rib with that little amount of meat on the side. I’d seen another table order it so I figured I’d try it out. However, these ribs were on the parrilla cooking probably from the afternoon so the tenderness was minimal and I’m one who like my meat to be medium-rare and there was no red when when cutting through the top layer of meat attached to the rib. This detracted my enjoyment and made me think that I should’ve just stuck with ordering my typical bife de lomo or bife de chorizo.

I can’t really say much about this place aside from the service being unattentive and the price of the food not comparatively equal to the quality received. Like Cabaña Las Lilas I probably would not go to this place again. Though this is the only place that I’ve found that serves the big beef ribs I can’t see the value of this place. Maybe the Palermo location would be a different experience but you probably can get the sense that I’m not really a fan of the Puerto Madero area. I mean, c’mon, they got a TGI Fridays over there too.

Actually, if you look on the website of the people who own the brand name, you will see that this particular outlet is not owned or franchised by the brand, and is actually operating illegally since 2006 - there is a lawsuit ongoing, but no resolution yet. Try the one in Martinez, which is cheaper, has better service, and better quality in the food - and is actually owned by La Caballeriza…
