Don Julio: Gurrachaga y Guatemala

I wrote about Don Julio after my first visit to Buenos Aires and found it necessary to comment about this restaurant again now after several visits to Buenos Aires and having dined at many different parrillas that’ll be reviewed on The Bastardly Travels. After trying roughly 15 different parrillas I can still say that Don Julio remains my favorite. In essence, it’s my failsafe. I’ve probably dined here over 10 times and each time I’ve never walked away disappointed; well, except for the time we went on 9 de Julio and they weren’t doing anything on the grill that day. Though the clientele has increased in the amount of tourists being that the restaurant is conveniently located in Palermo Soho, the quality of service and food has not downgraded one bit.

I’ll get by on dinner for two, minus wine, for approximately 83 pesos (around $27 USD). This includes sharing 2 empanadas, a chorizo, a bife de chorizo, salad, sodas, and dessert; not to mention a 3.50 pesos service fee each. From my perspective, the portion for 1 steak alone can feed two people but that’s just my personal take. They have half-portions available too. Another bife de chorizo will run you 24 pesos (less than $8 USD).

I use this place as my level for standards. There are other places that I will review that amongst travelers and locals to be considered having better meat and bigger portions but of course, at a higher premium. Don Julio will be written up in travel guides and become an instant tourist trap. I’ve always made this one of the first and last places to book-end my visits to Argentina.
