Don Ernesto: Carlos Calvo y Defensa

Don Ernesto is another of the San Telmo parrillas I’ve eaten at. Immediately when entering you’ll notice the writing on the wall by many patrons throughout the years. I thought that was pretty cool and saw this as an opportunity to leave a bastardly mark somewhere in the restaurant. However, when asking if I could sign the wall, they told me no because there was no more room; that disappointed me because surely I could’ve found a spot.

Nonetheless, let’s move on to the food. The menu is your standard fare of cuts and naturally I went for the bife de lomo. We ate here after trying La Brigada so I was inclined to do the spoon test and with the dull spoon on the table I was still able to cut the bife de lomo so I was happy with the quality and it was jugoso enough for me. As for the service, well, it’s two sided. On one side we ate fairly late that night so there was probably two other tables in the restaurant with customers so service was very attentive and I appreciated that. But on the flip side, maybe the waitress was very attentive and fast because she wanted to get rid of us so that they could ultimately close for the night? But overall I thought she did do a good job and I was satisfied with my meal. It was a good thing that she swayed me from ordering some pollo in addition to the bife de lomo and chorizo. Hey, what can I say? I was hungry that night and still had not yet ordered pollo ever at any parrilla.

Don Ernesto is another good option if El Desnivel has the long line out the door (you can probably thank Fodors for that). However, this place isn’t very big itself so a line can run out of this place too. As mentioned earlier, we went late so waiting was not a problem. The price for steak is reasonable and I definitely think it’s worth a shot when in San Telmo.
